Lampeter Today
From the 1960's to the present day, Lampeter has
grown and changed. In 1801, the population was 669, but had
grown to 1722 by 1901. In 1991, there were 1989 people resident
in the town, 1410 of those being Welsh speaking. Lampeter is
therefore among the smallest towns in Wales and the United Kingdom,
but is very cosmopolitan. Students from all over the world come
to study here, and Lampeter has the distinction of being the
first town in Wales to have an Asian mayor. Farming has been
joined by education and tourism as major industries. Lampeter
is now in the county of Cerdigion, and can boast a wide range
of shops and services to rival many a larger town. The Lampeter
Museum, situated between the Council Office and the Library
contains a small display of local artifacts and is well worth
a visit. |
